Commissioned by Jim Ryan, with this observation:
How about a song about sex? That has never been addressed before.
Seriously though, most songs about lusting, longing and doing the nas are set in the exciting beginning or bitter end of a love affair. How about a song that addresses the hopes, conflicts and thrills of long haulers d’une certaine age?
The great Rick Witkowski contributed a guitar solo, which I turned into a duet.
Lyrics
In Penelope's garden working on my hands and my knees
The day was warm, and the cat watched me from the shade of the shed
Penelope said
"Honey I beg your pardon, could you help me out if you please"
I looked up from my digging around, her face was flushed and red
My love, Penelope
What is it you ask of me
There's something you could do for me inside
The front door is too far away
The kitchen door's too wide
And though I am particular about who gets the key
If you'd go in through my back door it would please me
On Penelope's ladder with a brush and roller in hand
The sun was hot, and the wet paint shone on the side of the shed
Penelope said
"Hon if you've got a moment, you could get me out of a jam"
I looked down from that shaky step, and this is what I said
Penelope, my love
What is it you're thinking of
There's something you could bring to me inside
The front door's stuck, and my hand truck has rusted out and died
And though it's awfully heavy you seem strong enough to me
If you'd bring it in my back door it would please me
Penelope my love for you is free of doubt and shame
I have always felt the same, how did I find you
And what did we do that led us to the one that we became
Every time you call my name I'm right behind you
There's something that you do to me inside
The front door's for another day
The kitchen's true and tried
And if say you love me and that I'm your cup of tea
You can come in through the back door, that would please me
